Navy sailor dies in Bedford Basin

Tragedy in the Bedford Basin in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Royal Canadian Navy says it happened during small boat operations on Friday.

Two sailors were operating a rigid-hull inflatable boat that overturned and capsized at around 10 pm.

The Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre Halifax dispatched ships from the Canadian Coast Guard.

The two sailors were taken to hospital, but one could not be revived.

The second sailor was treated and released.

Military Police are investigating.

In a statement on social media the premier of Nova Scotia, Tim Houston says, the news is “devastating”.

”My thoughts are with this sailor’s family, friends, and colleagues during this tragic and difficult time.”
