Cut in provincial gas taxes to become permanent

A cut to the provincial gas taxes, first made three years ago, will become permanent.

Taxes were reduced by 5.7 cents a litre and 5.3 cents on diesel fuel in 2022 to offer some relief to the rising cost of living at the time.

The measure was extended four times.

Premier Doug Ford says making the cut permanent will save motorists as much as $115 each year.

“That builds on the $1.7 billion our government has saved families since the temporary gas and fuel tax cuts were first introduced in July of 2022,” says Ford.

The measure is to be included in the provincial budget set to be delivered at Queen’s Park on Thursday.

“Ontario families have seen prices on everyday items go up over the last several years,” says Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy.

“To help Ontarians cope with the high cost of living and the impacts of the economic uncertainty caused by tariffs, we are continuing to take action to ease the pressure and do more to help lower costs for households.”

The tax cuts do not apply to leaded gasoline or aviation fuel.
