New fires in northwest Ontario as Manitoba evacuations widen

Four new wildfires have been reported in Northwestern Ontario, including a 100-hectare fire near Deer Lake First Nation (Red Lake 12) that remains out of control.

Smaller fires near Pikangikum, Webequie, and Rainy Lake were also confirmed, with two now extinguished.

Kenora 20 continues to be the largest fire in the region at over 34,000 hectares, following growth on its western edge in Manitoba.

The fire remains not under control, though crews are making progress on the Ontario side. Travel and land use restrictions remain in effect around both Kenora 20 and Kenora 14.

Across the region, 12 fires are active, three of which are not under control.

Manitoba declares emergency as wildfires force evacuations

More than 17,000 people are being evacuated from northern Manitoba, including the city of Flin Flon, where an out-of-control fire has moved within two kilometres. Reception centres are open in Winnipeg, with residents urged to follow all evacuation instructions.
