Canada getting closer to a trade deal with U.S., say officials

Canada and the U.S. are getting closer to a trade deal.

That’s according to multiple reports, including from CBC and CTV, which say officials from Washington and Ottawa have exchanged a trade document.

They say the document outlines how Canada would bolster Arctic infrastructure. The area is a key location for national defense as polar ice melts.

The document also explains two previous announces: how Canada would meet its NATO defence spending targets and how it will boost border security.

A deal will likely not be finished ahead of the G7 summit in Alberta next week.

It’s unclear how an agreement might affect the tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump, according to the sources.

The new outlets spoke to sources close to the matter, who say there’s still a lot of work to do.
