Two agencies in northwestern Ontario receive autism funding

Two agencies in northwestern Ontario are sharing $800,000 over two years to improve autism services.

Darcia Curtis from FIREFLY says they will be getting $400,000 to help more children, and the families access clinical services.

“It helps us serve families and connect families to the Ontario Autism Program,” explains Curtis.

“So, there is a registration process, and some pathways you have to navigate. It helps us enhance core clinical services and just to ensure those families are well-supported across the region.”

Alicia Rogerson is executive director of Kenora-Rainy River Districts Child and Family Services and says they will also be getting $400,000 over two years.

“Some of those services include parent support groups, groups for kids. Also, an investment in things like specific mental health services that are geared for children who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and sensory informed therapeutic spaces.”

The funding comes from the Ontario Autism Program’s workforce capacity fund.
