SIU releases report into Anishinaabe Park shooting last June

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit has found no criminal wrongdoing on the part of an OPP officer in the death of a 57-year-old man at Anicinabe Park just over a year ago.

The incident start just after noon last June 25th, when a man doused himself in gas, picked up two large meat cleavers and lit the park office on fire.

Police asked the fire fighters to stand by with a hose, in case he lit himself on fire.

The man brandishing the knives stepped towards the fire fighters, and the OPP officer discharged his rifle.

He was taken to hospital for surgery for bullet wounds to his chest and abdomen but passed away later that afternoon.

In all, the SIU conducted 25 civilian witness accounts and interviewed 7 officers or other officials, who were at the scene.

The SIU had 7 investigations attached to the case along with three forensic investigators.
