Airport Authority caught off guard by Bearskin cancellation

The chair of the Kenora Airport Authority admits they were caught off-guard by the announcement Bearskin Airlines of the cancellation of it’s service.

Ryan Reynard says they aren’t sure how they are going to fill the void.

“Working with our stakeholders and partners, we’re looking to find alternative solutions,” says Reynard.

“Whether it’s through Bearskin or another airline, (we want) to see if there is a way to mitigate the cancellation of that particular flight, and see if their are other options out there.”

Reynard admits the decision took them by surprise.

“We were caught off guard. We weren’t expecting that. We weren’t involved in any consultations with them prior to that announcement. So we’re devastated by the cancellation of service to the Kenora Airport.”

Reynard says statistics show people from Kenora are flying, but they are choosing to go to Winnipeg for cheaper flights rather than fly from Kenora.

Officials from both the Airport Authority and the City of Kenora will be meeting to decide what, if anything, can be done to make sure there is air travel to and from the Kenora Airport.
