Hunter rescued on ice near Peawanuck

The Nishnawbe Aski Police say it’s unsafe to be out on the ice, even in the far north.

This after an 82 hunter was rescued near Peawanuck this week.

The incident took place on Wednesday when the man’s snowmachine became stuck in the river ice near the melting ice road.

A community rescue team was formed and located the man just before midnight.

Police say the man was unable to retrieve his snowmachine and walked five kilometers along the ice road until he was finally located and taken back to Peawanuck.

Peawanuck is 780 kilometers north of Thunder Bay near Hudson’s Bay.
