The provincial government is getting tough on impaired drivers.
New legislation proposes the installation of ignition interlock devices upon conviction and a lifetime driving ban if their actions lead to the death of another.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sakaria says police report a 30 per cent increase in impaired driving.
“Too many lives have been turned upside down by the reckless and selfish actions of someone else. Too many families in Ontario have had their lives torn apart. Families torn apart by the careless and shameful actions of an impaired driver. There is no excuse for driving drunk,” says Sakaria.
Anyone convicted of impaired driving would be required to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle.
The proposed legislation also calls for mandatory remedial education and treatment for first- and second-time alcohol and drug-related offences through the Center for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
The province is also looking at measures that address the rise of motorists caught impaired through the use of drugs.
Sakaria says a province-wide campaign will be launched that highlights the dangers and consequences of drug-impaired driving.
Police forces across the country will also receive additional funding and resources for drug detection during roadside enforcement.
“So, it’s really about, from the province’s side, doing anything and everything we can to ensure that we disincentivize anyone for making such a foolish choice, which is to get behind the wheel while being impaired,” says Sakaria.
