Panthers hold off Oilers to win first Stanley Cup

The Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup champions.

They beat the Edmonton Oilers 2-1 in Game 7 on home ice.

Sam Reinhart had the game-winning-goal in the second period.

Sergei Bobrovsky had 23 saves for Florida, he turned away several Edmonton chances in the third.

It’s the first Cup win for Florida in franchise history, they entered the league in the 1993/94 season.

Edmonton were trying to become the first Canadian team to win the Cup since 1993.

They were also trying to erase a 3-0 series deficit in the Cup final and win, that hasn’t happened since 1942.

Connor McDavid of the Oilers won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

He broke Wayne Gretzky’s playoff-assist record and had 42 points.

McDavid is the first player from the losing team to win playoff MVP since Jean-Sebastien Giguere on the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in 2003.
