Play begins this week in the Superior International Junior Hockey League.
Once again, this year, the league has eight teams: seven in northwestern Ontario, but just one in the US.
Dean Thibodeau is the new commissioner and says one of his goals is to expand the league.
“There’s plenty of opportunity both from state side and in Canada to expand the league and provide more opportunity,” says Thibodeau.
“So, we’re definitely going to look into those opportunities and make some contacts and hope to expand in the near future.”
He suggests it’s too early to say which markets they are looking at.
“I can’t say that one way or the other, but it’s something that we’re definitely going to look at immediately and obviously hope for the best.”
The Lumberjacks relocated from Spooner, Wisconsin to Ironwood, Michigan earlier this summer.
The SIJHL will start the new season in Ironwood on September 13th.
