Changes proposed to allocation of moose hunting tags

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry wants more hunters in the bush.

It proposes changes to the point system used to allocate moose hunting tags.

The ministry uses two stages to award tags; a primary allocation and a second chance allocation,

Tags issued in the primary allocations are issued based on points.

Hunters are permitted to forego their selection and drop to the second chance allocation for an opportunity to acquire a tag associated with a low-demand hunting area.

The ministry says this has resulted in some tags not being claimed and preventing others from hunting.

Under the proposed regulations, any hunter awarded a tag based on their first choice in the second round would lose their points whether they claim the tag or not.

A new third round, to be called last chance allocation, is also proposed, with all unclaimed and unawarded moose tags made available to hunters to purchase.

The province is now gathering input on the changes through the Environmental Registry until November 22.
