AMCTO wants changes to the Municipal Elections Act

There are a number of recommendations to move Ontario’s Municipal Election Act into the 21st Century.

The Act hasn’t been updated for 30 years.

The Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks, Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) has a number of suggestions for updating the act.

That includes shortening the nomination period with the deadline in July instead of May.

The AMCTO also recommends removing a requirement to have at least 25 signatures of endorsement for a candidate.

Currently municipalities handle both municipal and school board elections.

It would like school board boundaries to change so they more closely align with municipal boundaries.

Language in the Act should also be updated to acknowledge digital changes now and into the future.

The next municipal election isn’t until the fall of 2026.
