Portage Bay Bridge closed indefinitely

The Portage Bay Bridge is being closed until further notice

This after an assessment found the bridge no longer safe for vehicle or pedestrian access.

The city suggests this closure is expected to be longer-term as options for repairs are looked at.

The preliminary results from this year’s assessment indicate that the 99-year-old bridge, in its current condition, is no longer safe for vehicle or pedestrian access.

However, engineers have confirmed that boat traffic may continue to travel safely beneath the bridge.

Director of Engineering and Infrastructure, Greg Breen stated, “This closure will impact members of the community’s travel, but this closure is essential for ensuring everyone’s safety. We will take the appropriate time to ensure repairs are done correctly”.

The city has installed additional fencing and signage to prevent access to pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to follow the detour routes in place.
