Local first nations oppose nuclear storage site

The Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resource Council (AKRC) says it has not given its free, informed, prior consent to a proposal to bury spent nuclear fuel in the Ignace area.

The council is made up of five First Nations on the east side of Lake of the Woods.

AKRC represents Wauzhusk Onigum, Ojibways of Onigaming, Northwest Angle #33, Big Grassy River, and Animakee Wa Zhing 37.

Chief Chris Skead Wauzhusk Onigum says the deep geological repository poses and unprecedented threat to the integrity, safety, and sanctity of Lake of the Woods and its surrounding environments.

He adds that depositing spent nuclear waste poses an unacceptable risk to their communities.

AKRC has passed a resolution opposing the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s site selection process.

The First Nations came out with their resolution just weeks after the Town of Ignace indicated its willingness host the underground nuclear waste storage site.
