NAPS investigating two fires on Kasabonika Lake First Nation

The Nishnawbe Aski Nation Police are investigating a couple of cases of arson on Kasabonika Lake First Nation.

One involved the community church, which was completely destroyed.

An on-duty officer noticed the blaze Sunday morning around 7 am.

Community firefighters responded to the blaze with a water truck in an attempt to extinguish the fire.

Despite those firefighting efforts, the church was completely lost to the fire.

Arson is being investigated as a possible cause.

Earlier that morning, a construction trailer was set on fire.

A suspect was identified and arrested later that day.

A 21-year-old man faces three charges in connection to the fire, which is believed to have caused in excess of $5,000 damage.

He’s been charged with:

  • Arson – Disregard for Human Life
  • Arson – Damage to Property
  • Mischief Over $5,000

He appeared in bail court yesterday on the charges and was remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
