City helping make improvements for Black Sturgeon boaters

Some upgrades are coming to a couple of popular boating attractions on Black Sturgeon Lake.

The City of Kenora is contributing $40,000 to help fix up the Thatcher’s Landing boat launch and the Black Sturgeon rollers in the Winnipeg River.

The city admits it doesn’t own either of the boating structures, but it felt it was important to contribute to their upkeep.

Money will go towards ditching, deadfall removal, and culvert replacement at Thatcher’s Landing, and rebuilding bearings and decking repairs at the rollers.

Phil Burns, Past President of the BSLPOA, says the funding is more than welcome, “Our lake community is truly grateful to City Council for this grant. It will significantly enhance access to Black Sturgeon Lake at Thatcher Road and the rollers leading to the Winnipeg River. This funding will help us improve the quality and longevity of these key access points.”

The funding comes from the city’s Municipal Accommodation tax.
