“You know what they say about big hitters: the woods are full of them.” Jimmy Demaret.
Another lovely day! Barely a lick of wind and temperatures that made a few of us men melt. 62 men and 5 guests made up today’s roster. Numerous terrific scores were recorded. There were several eagles on the scramble half of the scorecard today but none as spectacular as that of Doug Gann on the 11th hole, on his own ball, where he dropped his approach shot from about 150 yards for a 2. That’s a double circle and that has got to look good on a scorecard! By the way, this is the second eagle recorded on number 11 this season. Randy Smith had a 2 on this hole just a few weeks ago.

Also a few weeks ago, I posted clarifications on the senior men’s league rules as questions had been asked. I am re-printing parts, adding parts, and generally interested in confusing you! But seriously, I am asking for your input as there seems to be some disagreement.
-Long drives must be in the fairway. (The one that you’re supposed to be on!)
-Longest putts must start on the green.
-If you swing at the ball and miss, sorry, but it counts as a stroke since you intended to hit it. It is called a “whiff,” not that it matters. Just the opposite holds true if you hit the ball, but didn’t mean to. Like in a practice swing or something. PGA tour member Zach Johnson is notorious for this. And along this same line, if your ball falls off the tee it is not a stroke unless you intended it to fall off by swinging your club at it. (That joke is so old anyway!)
-The highest score you can record on any hole is a nine. This one is contentious as there have been some who have stopped at triple bogey being the highest recorded score. So, either we have a vote or we pick someone that has to decide! As well, this rule has been further expanded to state that during our championship rounds, coming up in a few weeks, you’re expected to count every stroke even if you get a 16 like Kevin Na did at the Texas Open in 2011. It’s worth the Google!
The play-by-play looks like something out of a basketball player’s shot chart. Not a golfer’s. “Shot hit 5’10.” ” “Shot hit 4′ 7.” ” “Shot hit 27′ 2.” ” “Shot hit 36′ 5.” ” “Shot hit 8′ 8.” ” “Shot hit 82′ 2.” ” “Shot hit 23′ 11.” ” “Shot hit 48 yds to the primary rough.”It was after that 48-yarder when Kevin Na emerged from the nasty tree stuff on the ninth hole at the 2011 Texas Open, on his way to a duodecuple bogey 16 (12-over-par). The gallery applauded. He grinned.
Anyway, what is your opinion?
The season-long match play continues. Great shots are winning holes and while some advance others are given the proverbial boot. Grab a lawn chair and beverage (from the clubhouse, that is!) and cheer your favorite on.
Mark your calendar for these upcoming events:
- Championship Rounds – September 3 and 10.
- Season final Golf and Awards Windup dinner – September 17.
Results for the league on August 13 are as follows:
Front nine scramble winners were Trevor Holm, Nelson Rozon, Dean Dubreuil, and Bruce Braun with a -4 score of 31. Congratulations! Their performance included an eagle on number eight. Two other teams also eagled number eight. That’s pretty good stuff but not as good as Doug Gann’s!
Other achievements:
Closest to the pole on number 10: Gary “Just a Foot Away” Read.
Longest putt on number 12: Ron “It’s in the Hole” Pendegast.
Closest to the cup first shot on number 14: George “Stuffed It” Hulmes.
Longest putt on number 16: Russ “Double Breaker” Garneys.
Longest drive on number 18: Randy “Boom Boom” Baird.
Flight winners:
Flight 1: Keith Lake, 40.
Flight 2: Randy Smith, 40.
Flight 3: Dick Green, 41.
Flight 4: Al Pekarchuk, 41.
Flight 5: Jay Ford, 49. Won on a countback against three other players.
See you next week!
And a final word… Thanks to all of you who have been submitting your pictures and anecdotes!
