Local health center makes large improvements with government funding

The Mary Berglund Community Health Centre in Ignace receives $537,000 to make changes to pediatric services.

Funding is being invested into new staff, specialists, and programs to help children in Ignace.

Executive Director, Heidi West, says the center was thrilled to hear the announcement.

“We’re bringing some specialties in, hiring more staff, providing programs in the community, we’re also partnering with a local school to do a back-to-school readiness program,” said West.

They are partnering with three gynecology physicians who are coming to the community every month. In addition, they hired a child phyciatrist, which many kids are on a waitlist for.

The Ontario government is provided the funding to work toward top-quality children’s care at the center, as a part of their 330-million-dollars annually to help pediatric services.

West says they received one time funding in April but are now receiving base funding of half a million dollars per year.

“We’ve also been able to hire a new social worker and are currently recruiting a new child development specialist.”

They have been planning the changes over the past few months and still have lots of work to do, West says.
