Forest fire burns near Kasabonika

A forest fire burning near the community of Kasabonika has grown to 15 hectares.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the blaze is less than 4 kilometers away from the remote First Nation.

It was discovered Tuesday night and three waterbombers and a birddog aircraft were dispatched from Geraldton.

A second air attack group from Pickle Lake, which included two water bombers continued to work on the fire until dark.

Yesterday, two fire ranger crews along with a helicopter were also dispatched.

The MNRF says the fire remains not under control.

There are currently 33 active wildfires in the northwest region, including two more in the Red Lake District.
