CN says it expects to have rail traffic moving between Thunder Bay and Fort Frances later this month.
It has been halted since the middle of August with the sudden collapse of the Five Mile Bridge, east of Fort Frances, that crosses Rainy Lake.
In an email, Media Relations Advisor Michelle Hannan states crews have been working at the site since.
The company has received emergency federal approval for a temporary repair that will allow rail service on the line to resume by mid-September, weather permitting.
Hannan notes about 45,000 rail cars move along the line to the Port of Thunder Bay each year.
“We are working diligently to resume train operations as soon as possible. CN is taking precautions to ensure that there are no lasting impacts to the waterway or surrounding environment by remaining engaged with environmental consultants and regulators.,” writes Hannan.
There are plans for a permanent replacement that need approval from Transport Canada.
Hannan says she does not expect boats to be able to pass through the area until next spring.
