Sachigo Lake latest community to be connected to power grid

Sachigo Lake is the latest community to be connected to the power grid.

The Watay Power Transmission project is costing over $1.34 billion and includes 24 First Nation communities in the far north.

Sachigo Lake Chief Simon Tait says they are no longer constrained by the limits of diesel generators.

Minister of Energy and Electrification Stephen Lecce says it’s a priority for the government to expand and connect clean and affordable energy to some of the most remote northern communities.

He adds that it helps improve the quality of life of First Nation communities replacing all diesel generators with clean electricity.

Since 2018, 12 First Nations have been connected to the power grid.

McDowell Lake is the next scheduled community to be connected.

Sachigo Lake is located 425 kilometers north of Sioux Lookout.
