A Kenora outfitter and a hunter have been convicted of illegal hunting practices.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports an Ontario court heard that a man from Ottawa used the services of a Kenora outfitter to bear hunt in August 2022.
The man shot a bear but did not possess a proper license.
A staff member from the camp and the hunter used the meat as bait for a second hunt.
The court was told the hunter used a tree stand, located near the camp’s landfill site.
The Ministry says Halley’s Camps was fined $2,500 after pleading guilty to charges of abandoning black bear flesh suitable for food and hunting black bear within 400 metres of a waste disposal site.
Louis Halley, an employee of the camp, was fined $1,500 after pleading guilty to abandoning black bear flesh suitable for food.
Sherif Aboutabl was convicted of hunting black bear without a license, abandoning black bear flesh suitable for food, hunting bear within 400 metres of a waste disposal site and failing to immediately invalidate a tag.
He was fined $5,500 and banned from hunting for five years.
