Concern raised about the future of Norman Park

A former mayor of Kenora wants city council to honor a long-standing covenant for Norman Park.

It’s that the park be used for recreation and reforestation purposes.

In a deputation this week, Joyce Chevrier says she’s opposed to any commercial development on the property.

“On behalf of the residents that are here, and those that aren’t, we are requesting that council gives serious thought to placing a new covenant, on Land Titles, which will protect Norman Park, which is a people’s park,” Chevrier explained in her deputation to city council this week.

Chevrier says she opposed to any sort of development there.

“It’s a stipulation, registered on Land Titles, and then it continues to be used for a park and reforestation purposes only for a period 99 years. Also, a no-parking sign, that has been removed, needs to be replaced.”

Chevrier says the park was initially deeded over to the municipality in 1946 and despite several attempts, development at the park has been defeated.

The proposed apartment complex across from the park would like to use some of Norman’s parking area for its tenants.
