Mark Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada, won’t become a federal Liberal, despite previous reports that the government was trying to recruit him.
“Carney is not an option,” according to New Brunswick MP Dominic LeBlanc, who spoke to Brunswick News.
“That discussion has concluded.”
LeBlanc recently took over as Finance Minister after Chrystia Freeland’s sudden resignation on Monday. She held the position since 2020. But some rumours were circulating that Freeland would be replaced by Carney.
However, LeBlanc says that is “no longer something that is real.”
He says there will soon be a cabinet shuffle, where he’ll keep the finance portfolio, but he will have to give up his role as public safety minister.
However, he says he will remain the lead on Canada-U.S. border relations and stay focused on talking to the administration of incoming President Donald Trump.
A few weeks ago, Trump said he would hit all Canadian imports with a 25 per cent tariff, if the country did not tighten its border security and limit the amount of fentanyl crossing the border.
LeBlanc also unveiled Canada’s response, an amped up border security plan that includes AI, dog teams, drones, RCMP helicopters, and 24/7 border surveillance.
