Kenora City Council has been asked to take a stand on a deep underground nuclear waste repository in northwestern Ontario.
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has selected a site between Ignace and Wabigoon.
In a deputation this week, Dan Olscamp says it’s time council make its position known.
“Some municipalities have declared opposition… others were deadlocked in their debate…. our local municipality has been silent,” Olscamp told council in a recent deputation.
“At least that appears to me to be the case. Many First Nations have spoken up in unison, in opposition, and they are coming out of the woodwork to do so.”
Meanwhile, We the Nuclear Free North says it’s petition against a proposed deep geological repository for spent nuclear fuel has been tabled in the House of Commons.
The signatures were tabled by MPs from Windsor West, Timmins-James Bay and Thunder Bay-Rainy River.
The group says the government has 45 days to respond to the petition.
The regulatory process for the NWMO’s proposed site is set to begin in 2028.
