Kenora OPP update crime numbers so far in 2024

Property crime was down, but violent crime is up so far in Kenora in 2024.

Acting inspector Jim Neild says some of their programs have been paying off, especially in terms of property crime.

“Theft under $5,000, which is a high call volume for us in the City of Kenora, has been trending down,” Neild told the OPP Detachment Police Board recently.

“We look at the year-to-date data, we’re down significantly from last year and the year before. I think that’s a lot to be said with our presence downtown and our foot patrol.”

In terms of violent crime, which includes assaults and sexual assaults, it was up 6.7 percent this past year.

“We did have an increase in month (of November) by 25 percent from the previous year, but that six extra charges for assault. Again, that’s something we’re trying to combat, whether we’re downtown or wherever we need to be.”

The final year-end crime statistics won’t be compiled until later this month.
