Town of Atikokan fined

The Town of Atikokan has been fined twice under the Ontario Water Resources Act.

In both instances it was for failing to comply with a Directors order to upgrade their sewage pumping stations and install backflow preventers as required.

The fines total $60,000 plus $15,000 in victim surcharge fees.

One fine is for $50,000, the other is for $10,000.

The Ministry of the Environment says the town completed the required upgrades to the sewage stations, however the work was not finished until six months after the deadline, and not all the backflow preventers were installed.

The town has been given 180 days to pay the fines.
