Portage Bay Bridge continues to be closed indefinitely

It could be a couple of more years until the south side of Keewatin and the north side are united.

The City of Kenora is still waiting on a report on the Portage Bay Bridge.

The bridge has been closed since the end of October because a structural report showed it was unsafe.

Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Greg Breen says they are waiting for an enhanced inspection report, but it may be April until council gets that information.

Breen says by the time they find out what needs to be done, the cost of repairs, design plans and putting it out to tender, it could be sometime in 2026.

In the meantime, councillors want to know if the bridge can be used as a walkway.

Breen says they should know more when they get the inspection report.

Councillor Barb Manson says “they are going to get nailed to the cross”, if they can’t fix the bridge sooner.

She says having it out of commission for as long as two years is not acceptable.
