Sewer and water rates will continue to increase in the City of Kenora, but some users could see a significant increase.
A report prepared for City Council by Watson and Associates recommends large commercial users with 2-inch water meters could see their water rates increase by almost 60 percent by 2027.
Director of Engineering and Infrastructure Greg Breen says the goal is the make sure there is an even playing field, and the city’s infrastructure deficit doesn’t grow larger.
“Over these 10 years we’re closing that gap, and although the infrastructure deficit will not be erased, the intention is to stop it from continuing to grow,” Breen told council at their Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday.
On the other hand, people living in multi-residential buildings could see a significant reduction in their rates by almost 33 percent in 2027.
Councillor Lisa Moncrief points out Kenora already has high sewer and water rates.
“Kenora is either at the top or at the top of all the communities as far as present-day costs. I think we need to take a little more time, seeing who this is going to hit, and how this is going to affect people.”
Kenora City Council will take another month to digest the sewer and water report.
