25% surcharge now applied to hydro delivered stateside

Ontario is now applying a 25% surcharge on electricity it delivers to Minnesota, New York, and Michigan.

It is the province’s response to the trade tariffs that have been threatened by the Trump Administration.

Premier Doug Ford says it is time to put an end to the chaos the tariffs pose.

“Until these tariffs are off the table, until the threat of tariffs is gone for good, Ontario will not relent. We will not back down,” says Ford.

“Pausing some tariffs, making last-minute exemptions, it won’t cut it. We need to end the chaos once and for all. We need to sit down, work together and land a fair deal.”

Ford says the surcharge will cost the three states as much as $400,000 per day, and American electricity users can see their rates increase by as much as $100 per month.

He is prepared to increase the charge, even halt electricity delivery altogether if the U.S. escalates its action.

“I feel terrible for the American people because it’s not the American people who started this trade war. It’s one person who’s responsible. That’s President Trump.”

Ford says he would rather be working to sell the U.S. more energy.

“None of this makes sense. Costly tariffs against your closest friends and allies do not make sense.”
