Ontario’s Premier is being invited to the White House.
Doug Ford says U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick called him to discuss the trade dispute.
“Secretary Lutnick has sent out an olive branch to us to come down and immediately meet with him, meet with the whole Trade Administration and discuss the future,” says Ford.
Federal Finance Minister Domenic Leblanc will accompany the Premier.
Ford believes they will have a good discussion in light of the tariff talk that has transpired this week.
Ontario imposed a 25% surcharge on electricity delivered to Minnesota, Michigan and New York on Monday in response to the tariff threats imposed by the U.S.
Ford is lifting the surcharge temporarily ahead of the meeting.
Ford wants to see it lead to a fair deal.
“And again, by no means are we just going to roll over because we don’t roll over to anyone. What we are going to do is have a constructive conversation moving forward. We need to sit down and move this forward.”
