Feds plan to expand Arctic military operations

Canada wants more troops on the ground near the Arctic.

The feds will spend nearly $420 million to expand military operations in the area, according to a news release.

Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement in Iqaluit yesterday.

They will also spend about $250 million to upgrade power plants and improve housing infrastructure in Nunavut.

Canada will also partner with Australia to create an early warning radar system for the North.

The feds previously allocated $6 billion for the project in 2022.

“Canada is, and forever will be, an Arctic nation, and we can never take our sovereignty and security in the region for granted,” Carney said in the release.
