New slab approved for the Moncrief Construction Sports Center ice surface

It’s going to cost the City of Kenora over $2.5 million to put a new slab into the Thistle Rink.

Council has awarded the contract to Winnipeg construction company Parkwest Projects Limited.

The work includes the installation of underfloor heating pipes, cooling pipes, a new floor slab, and new dasher boards.

Work on the new ice surface will start after the Home and Leisure show in May and hopefully the ice will be in by the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Part of the funding comes from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund which was awarded back in 2018/19.

Andrew Smith the General Manager of Recreation and Culture for the city and say the slab is more than 50 years old and was the originally put in place when the Rec. Center was first built.
