The Kenora OPP say they’ve seen a steady increase in the number of fraud complaints.
There’s been a 40 percent increase in the last two years.
Inspector Jim Neild says a number of the fraud complaints are from phone calls.
“I think that it’s important that everyone knows those are going around,” Neild told the Kenora OPP Detachment Board recently.
“We try to do media notifications when we hear that’s happening. What we’re learning is they pick a local number, or buy, somehow, and make those calls. It’s looks like a local number, right?”
Neild says in many cases seniors are being targeted.
“There could be many different layers of fraud. But provincially, we’re seeing a very big increase in the number of frauds, especially with seniors and the types of scams out there.”
Last year alone, there were 153 reported frauds in the Kenora area, compared to just over 107 in 2022.
