Some opposition to a deep underground nuclear waste repository in northwestern Ontario.
The Grassy Narrows First Nation staged the event Tuesday afternoon in downtown Kenora at the end of Main Street.
Judy Da Silva helped organize it and says even though not a lot of people attended, they are getting their point across.
“We’re 1,000,000 Anishinaabe population in Canada, that’s how many Anishinabek there are,” Swain told the rally.
“So, if you can wake up those people against nuclear waste, that’s what we’re aiming for.”
Brian Pollock is from Dryden and represents We the Nuclear Free North and says First Nations across the region are opposed to the nuclear waste dump.
“The AFN (Assembly of First Nation) chiefs they have sent a letter, ‘no to the nuclear waste’. The Chiefs of Ontario. Frances Kavanaugh, he’s sitting right over there, his letter…Eagle Lake!”
Pollock adds that he brought the issue of nuclear waste up at an all-candidates forum in Sioux Lookout Monday night.
The underground nuclear waste site would be located closer to Ignace, but local first nations are worried it might impact the water downstream from any proposed facility.
