Mamakwa removed from legislature

Comments made by a northwestern Ontario MPP in the legislature about Bill 5 led to his removal.

It came on Monday during the opposition’s questioning about the proposed measure to expedite mining development.

Kiiwetinoong’s Sol Mamakwa claimed Premier Ford was not being truthful to First Nations.

“Last week, the government said that they respect First Nations. That they respect treaty rights. Speaker, we know the Premier is telling untruths to First Nations,” said Mamakwa.

Mamakwa was repeatedly asked by House Speaker Donna Skelly to withdraw the comment before he was ordered to leave.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles also walked out of Question Period in support.

Mamakwa later explained to reporters the reasons behind his comments and refusal to withdraw them.

“That he respects and honours treaties. That he respects and honours the duty to consult. That’s not the truth because the way [Bill 5] is written up speaks the opposite,” says Mamakwa.
