Bill designed to speed up mining development passes

The Ford government has used its majority to push through the bill designed to speed up mining development.

Bill 5 allows for the designation of Special Economic Zones and gives the government sweeping powers to get projects approved.

Mines Minister Stephen Lecce says the bill will help the economy grow and Ontario compete for investment dollars.

“Everything we need to provide the country and the world is right here below our feet,” says Lecce.

“As global markets turn away from those oppressive regimes who violate labour laws, who disregard environmental set, who are building a coal plant a week, Ontario is ready to lead.”

The opposition feels the government is doing without proper consultation, especially with First Nations.

Kiiwetinoong MPP Sol Mamakwa says the Ford government has harmed relationships with First Nations.

“The government of Ontario has an unfortunate record of telling First Nations what they need instead of listening to what First Nations are actually saying. We, as First Nations, are not okay with that,” says Mamakwa.

“The final stage, the Royal Assent, which will officially put Bill C-5 into law, will mark the symbolic breaking of the Crown’s treaties and agreements with First Nations in Ontario.”

Some residents from Grassy Narrows First Nation watching the vote from the gallery voiced their displeasure while the vote was taking place, leading to their removal.

Chrissy Isaacs directed her anger at members of the Ford government, shouting “You’re not welcome on my territory. This bill will be met with resistance.”

“This law is an attack on my people, says Isaac.

“It would let mining companies destroy what little we have left — our land, our water, our way of life.”

Labour leaders also in attendance followed suit and were also removed.
