The provincial NDP is calling on Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford to resign as Indigenous Affairs Minister.
Leader Marit Stiles says Rickford failed to honour First Nations rights with the passing of legislation that aims to speed up mining development approvals.
At Queen’s Park, Stiles claims that Rickford’s actions and support of the bill disrespect First Nations and Treaty rights, taking the province backward.
“First Nations have been very clear. They can no longer work with this Minister,” says Stiles.
“How can this minister possibly continue in this role when he has made such a mess of this?”
Premier Doug Ford and Rickford were not in the legislature to respond to the allegations.
Ford later spoke with reporters, stating that they would discuss the Bill with First Nations during the summer.
Rickford posted on social media, showing him speaking at the Anishinabek Nation’s annual general meeting.
