Premier Doug Ford says he was the victim of an attempted theft.
Ford told the story while speaking of the need for reforms to Canada’s justice system during an infrastructure announcement in the Toronto area.
Ford says four people in masks poised to remove a vehicle from his driveway were quickly apprehended.
Toronto Police confirm that two adults and two youths were arrested, including a 17-year-old found failing to comply with a previous court order.
“Guess what’s going to happen? They’re going to be back out,” says Ford.
“Why don’t you guys come over for a barbecue tonight? I’ll take care of you better than the police. Thank God the police got you, and I never did.”
Ford used the story as an example of the need for improvements to the justice system.
He expressed his frustration over what he calls a weak justice system that is releasing criminals back to the streets within days or hours of their arrest.
Bail reform is one of the major issues Ford says he intends to press with Prime Minister Carney and his cabinet ministers.
“They need to change the criminal code. They need to change bail reform. I will be all over him until this gets done,” says Ford.
“Stop the dilly-dallying around. 10 years we’ve seen, “we’re going to do it. We aren’t going to do it.”
