Kenora city council endorses Elect Respect Pledge

Kenora city council has passed a lengthy resolution called for increased civility in municipal, provincial and federal politics.

The resolution calls for the rejection of harassment, abuse and personal attacks on elected individuals.

Council Lindsay Koch says they’ve been talking about this at the meetings of Federation of Canadian Municipalities that she has attended.

“Last year we had a huge discussion about all these things that are happening this year at FCM,” Koch told council at their open meeting this week.

“We talked about misinformation and disinformation and instability. It is impacting elected officials right across the country.”

Koch adds that the abuse of elected officials is becoming worse, not better.

“I think that it’s very important, not only for us, but certainly there are big things happening at some councils in Ontario, that are just not acceptable.”

The resolution is called the Elect Respect Pledge and passed at Kenora City council unanimously.
