Kenora OPP officers to wear body worn cameras soon

The Kenora OPP will be implementing new technology for the officers soon.

Inspector Jim Neild says they will be equipped with body-cameras in the next few weeks.

Neild says officers are being equipped with their own video recording system.

“Within the next several weeks, every officer at our detachment will have a body worn camera on,” Neild told Kenora city council recently during his annual report.

“So, you’ll see officers walking around town, the same as you see on TV, with a little square, that’s a camera, forward facing, and audio recording.”

Neild says the body worn cameras will be a useful addition to an officer’s equipment.

“I think leveraging these technologies will have a big impact on collection of evidence, increasing transparency, and enhancing public and officer safety,”

Neild adds that using technology helps them conducted better investigations and they have partnered with the city, the Kenora District Services Board and both School Boards to use their CCTV cameras to help conduct their investigations.
