Summer’s Sweet, But Fall and Winter Are Where It’s At Between the Lines

There’s something magical about summer in Kenora. The lake sparkles, the sun lingers late into the evening, and the town hums with the kind of energy only warm weather can bring. We soak it up, every barbecue, every boat ride, every lazy afternoon at the beach. Summer is our reward for enduring the long winters, and we love it.

But for those of us who live and breathe minor sports, summer is just the warm-up act.

Come September, the buzz starts to build. The air gets crisp, the leaves start to turn, and suddenly, the arenas, gyms, and fields come alive. Fall and winter are when Kenora’s minor sports community hits its stride. It’s when the real action begins.

Hockey, of course, is king. From Timbits to U18, the rinks are packed with kids chasing pucks and dreams. Parents huddle in the stands with coffee in hand, cheering on their teams and catching up with familiar faces. Coaches dig into their playbooks, volunteers lace up their skates, and the Zamboni becomes a local celebrity. It’s more than a sport, it’s a way of life.

But hockey’s just the beginning.

Basketball courts start to echo with the sound of sneakers and bouncing balls. Volleyball teams form, cheer squads get back to practice, and football players can be heard crashing and banging in the trenches. Even indoors, the energy is electric. These sports may not get the same spotlight as hockey, but they’re just as vital to our community. They teach teamwork, grit, and resilience. They build friendships that last far beyond the final whistle.

And while fall and winter bring the heat in terms of competition, we can’t talk about Kenora’s sports scene without tipping our caps to spring.

Baseball, my personal favorite, comes alive as soon as the snow melts. The crack of the bat, the smell of fresh-cut grass, and the rhythm of a well-played inning are pure joy. Whether it’s house league or AA, baseball in Kenora is a community effort, and it’s growing stronger every year. As president of the Kenora Baseball League and a coach myself, I’ve seen firsthand how much this sport means to our kids and families.

Soccer, too, deserves its spotlight. It’s fast, fun, and accessible. You’ll find kids of all ages chasing the ball across fields all over town, learning the value of teamwork and hustle. It’s a sport that brings people together, players, parents, and volunteers alike.

So yes, we love summer. We love the freedom, the sunshine, and the break from routine. And we absolutely cherish the spring sports that bring us back outside and into the game. But when the leaves fall and the snow starts to fly, that’s when Kenora’s minor sports community truly shines.

Fall and winter are where it’s at, until the spring and baseball is back!!
