NWMO to look at a second DGR

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is considering a second Deep Geological Repository.

The NWMO is already developing one in the Ignace area.

Spokesperson Joe Heil says they are also looking at another one to hold intermediate and high-level nuclear waste.

“It’s another DGR that we’re potentially looking at siting, and that will be another process in which we’ll be launching, probably most likely in 2027…a couple of years from now,” Heil told Dryden city council recently.

“Natural Resource Canada asked us to actually look at the intermediate and the high-level waste that exists also.  In 2026-2027 we’re going to begin a new siting process for that also.”

Heil says the second Deep Geological Repository would not likely be co-located near the one in Ignace.
