Thistle Arena’s Comeback: A New Chapter in Kenora’s Skating Story

If you grew up in Kenora, chances are you’ve laced up your skates at Thistle Arena (Moncrief Construction Sports Centre).

Maybe it was your first wobbly lap around the rink, clutching the boards for dear life. Or maybe it was the sound of your kid’s hockey team hitting the ice at 6 a.m., the smell of coffee and cold air mixing in the lobby.

For decades, Thistle Arena has been a backdrop for winter memories, family traditions, and community connection.

Now, after more than half a century of service, Thistle Arena has gotten a well-deserved upgrade. Starting in May 2025, the City of Kenora began a major renovation project to replace the original concrete slab beneath the ice surface, first poured in 1968. That slab has seen generations of skaters, but time and wear have taken their toll. Cracking and heaving have made ice maintenance increasingly difficult, and the need for a more stable foundation became clear.

Thanks to funding from the Province of Ontario’s Strategic Priorities Infrastructure Fund (SPIF), along with support from the City’s Recreation Centre Reserves, the arena is now undergoing a transformation that promises to improve both performance and sustainability. The new slab will feature heating pipes and insulation beneath the surface, which will help prevent freezing and heaving.

This not only makes the ice smoother and safer, but also simplifies maintenance and speeds up removal in the spring.

The Importance of Thistle Arena

For longtime Kenora residents, this upgrade is more than just infrastructure. It’s a renewal of a space that holds deep emotional value. Thistle Arena has been the site of countless milestones: first goals, first falls, first friendships. It’s where winter comes alive in Kenora, where families gather, and where the community finds rhythm in the colder months.

You might remember the old slab’s quirks, the way the ice would shift slightly in certain spots, or how the boards had that familiar creak when you leaned against them. These imperfections were part of the charm, but they also signaled the need for change. Now, with modern materials and thoughtful design, Thistle Arena is poised to serve the next generation of skaters with the same warmth and spirit that defined its past.

This renovation is also a reminder of how public spaces evolve with us. As Kenora grows and adapts, so too must the places we gather. Investing in recreation isn’t just about facilities. It’s about fostering community, supporting youth, and preserving the traditions that make this town feel like home.

So whether you’re a parent watching your child take their first glide, a senior reminiscing about your own skating days, or just someone who loves the hum of a busy rink, the reopening of Thistle Arena this fall is something to celebrate. It’s a return to form, a nod to history, and a step forward all wrapped into one.

Stay tuned for updates as the project nears completion, and get ready to make new memories on fresh ice. Thistle Arena is coming back, stronger and smoother than ever.

Kenora’s winter just wouldn’t be the same without it.
