Between The Lines: Dominating the Fairways: St. Thomas Aquinas golf teams lead the pack in NorWOSSA

As the leaves begin to turn and the fall sports season hits full swing, one team in Kenora is quietly making a lot of noise on the fairways. The St. Thomas Aquinas Saints golf teams, both boys and girls, are not just competing in the NorWOSSA league this season. They’re leading it.

With two events in the books and the NorWOSSA Championship set for this Thursday in Red Lake, the Saints have emerged as the team to beat in every division. From individual standouts to overall team dominance, the Saints are showing that golf in Kenora is alive and thriving.

A Strong Start Across the Board

The boys team kicked off the season with a commanding performance in Sioux Lookout, finishing first overall in the team standings. They followed that up with another first-place finish at Event #2 in Kenora, solidifying their spot at the top of the leaderboard heading into the championship.

Not to be outdone, the girls team has matched that energy, sitting first overall in the team standings after two events. Their consistency and depth have made them a formidable force in the league, and they’ll be looking to seal the deal in Red Lake.

Individual Excellence

While the team results are impressive, the individual performances have been equally remarkable. Leading the male division in points is Nathan Ogilvie, who has been a model of consistency and composure. His ability to stay focused under pressure and deliver strong rounds has made him the top golfer in the league so far.

On the girls’ side, Mary Edlund is setting the pace, leading the entire female division in points. Her poise and precision have been key to the Saints’ success, and she’ll be looking to cap off her season with a championship-worthy performance.

Depth That Delivers

One of the most impressive aspects of the Saints’ success is their depth. In the boys division, the leaderboard is stacked with St. Thomas Aquinas golfers:

  • Colby Laewetz sits 3rd overall
  • Nick Nelson is in 4th
  • Nolan Ogilvie holds 5th
  • Sawyer Barclay is in 6th
  • And Kaden George, a Grade 9 student, is making waves in 9th place out of a field of 80 golfers

This kind of depth not only boosts the team standings but also speaks to the strength of the program and the coaching behind it.

On the girls’ side, Annika Holmstrom deserves a special mention, currently sitting 5th overall in the female division. Her steady play has been a key contributor to the team’s top ranking.

Eyes on Red Lake

With the NorWOSSA Championship looming, all eyes will be on Red Lake this Thursday. The Saints have put themselves in a strong position, but golf is a game of inches, and anything can happen on championship day.

Still, if their performances so far are any indication, St. Thomas Aquinas is ready. The players have shown grit, focus, and a team-first mentality that bodes well for the final event of the season.

Building a Legacy

Beyond the scores and standings, what’s happening with the Saints golf teams is something special. It’s a testament to the growing strength of high school golf in Northwestern Ontario and the commitment of student-athletes who are balancing academics, competition, and personal growth.

For Kenora, it’s another proud moment in a year full of them. From hockey to baseball to golf, local athletes continue to shine on regional stages—and the Saints are leading the way.

Whether they bring home the championship or not, the 2025 season will be remembered as one where St. Thomas Aquinas set the standard. And for the young golfers coming up behind them, that bar has been raised.
