Kenora Sexual Assault Centre: Building safer communities through prevention, support, and healing

In the heart of Northwestern Ontario, the Kenora Sexual Assault Centre stands as a beacon of hope, healing, and proactive change. Since its founding in 1975 following a women’s conference, the Centre has grown into a vital community resource, offering inclusive, trauma-informed support to survivors of sexual violence and their families.

Led by Executive Director Jaye Wesley, the Centre’s mission is clear: to envision a world free from sexual violence and inequality. “We take an intersectional approach to combat sexual-based violence,” Wesley explains. “Our work is rooted in education, advocacy, and support, and we strive to address the societal factors that contribute to violence.”

A Wide Reach and a Deep Commitment

The Kenora Sexual Assault Centre’s services extend far beyond the city of Kenora, reaching into 23 fly-in communities across rural and remote regions. This expansive catchment area includes some of the most isolated communities in Ontario, where access to trauma-informed care is often limited.

From crisis counseling and hospital support to legal advocacy and cultural healing, the Centre’s offerings are both comprehensive and compassionate:

  • 24/7 Crisis Line: Staffed by trained volunteers and professionals, the Centre’s confidential crisis line provides immediate support to survivors and their loved ones.
  • Hospital Accompaniment: Staff and volunteers provide support during hospital visits, including assistance with sexual assault kit procedures.
  • Legal and Social Advocacy: The Centre helps survivors navigate police reporting, court processes, and access services like Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program.
  • Cultural Healing: With a dedicated healing room and partnerships with Elders, the Centre offers culturally appropriate support, including traditional medicine, hand drum-making workshops, and soft interview spaces.

Proactive, Preventative, and Community-Focused

While the Centre is known for its responsive services, Wesley emphasizes the importance of preventative education and upstream solutions. “We’re here 24/7, but we also want to be part of the solution before harm occurs,” she says.

The Centre regularly delivers workshops and presentations on topics such as:

  • Internet Safety for Youth
  • Healthy Relationships and Boundaries
  • Sexual Harassment and Exploitation
  • Human Trafficking Awareness

One standout initiative is the Centre’s partnership with Shoal Lake 39, where Kenora Sexual Assual Centre was invited by staff to deliver monthly school presentations. “The feedback from students has been incredible,” Wesley shares. “They’re engaged, informed, and eager to learn. It’s a two-way street – we learn from them too.”

A Pillar in the Community

The Kenora Sexual Assault Centre’s impact goes well beyond its core mandate. Staff are actively involved in food security initiatives, needle distribution committees, and community safety boards. They host events like Take Back the Night, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, and International Women’s Day, fostering awareness, solidarity, and healing.

“We’ve become a pillar in the community,” Wesley says. “Our team goes far beyond their job descriptions because in a small town, that’s what it takes.”

The Centre also collaborates with organizations like Kenora Firefly and the Youth Hub, supporting children’s services and Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer communities with inclusive programming and resources.

Looking Ahead: The Children At Risk of Exploitation (CARE) Unit

The Centre is also part of a new government-funded initiative – the Children At Risk of Exploitation (CARE) Unit, a residential and outreach program designed to fill service gaps for survivors. “We’re proud to be part of the wheel of care,” Wesley notes. “It’s another way we’re evolving to meet the needs of our community.”

This initiative will allow the Centre to provide specialized support for individuals at risk of or affected by human trafficking, with trained staff offering assessment, intervention, and culturally sensitive care.

Final Thoughts

The Kenora Sexual Assault Centre is more than a crisis response organization – it’s a proactive, inclusive, and culturally grounded force for change. Whether through education, advocacy, or healing, the Centre is helping build a safer, more informed future for all.

“We’re here for anyone who’s experienced sexual violence – whether it happened yesterday or decades ago. And we’re here to help communities prevent it from happening in the first place.”

Jaye Wesley, Executive Director, Kenora Sexual Assault Centre
