New forest fires reported over the weekend

A sign that the forest fire season in northwestern Ontario is not yet over.

The Ministry of Natural Resources’ Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services reports four new fires on Sunday.

Fires near Nolalu, Upsala, Fort Frances and Minaki were all small in size.

As of Sunday, there were 15 active fires in the northwest region.

Seven of them were classified as under control, while another seven were being observed and not considered to be a threat to the public or property.

The fire hazard ranges from low to extreme, with much of the Far North in the low range.

Pockets of extreme fire hazard exist along the Ontario-Minnesota border where little rain has fallen in the past couple of weeks.

The official end to the forest fire season is on October 31st.
