Premier Doug Ford says he wants the prime minister to take a tougher stand against US tariffs.
Specifically he says he’s angered by another increase in softwood lumber tariffs that took place Tuesday.
“What my message to the prime minister, when I meet him on Thursday, is if you can’t get a deal, let’s start hitting them back,” Ford exclaimed during his visit to Kenora on Wednesday.
“Let’s start hitting the US back hard, because all Trump does is continue.”
Ford adds that the issue of how to deal with tariffs will be top of the agenda, when he meets with Mark Carney.
“I am sick and tired of sitting and rolling over. We need to fight back. Folks, we are an economic powerhouse…we need to start hitting back and hitting back hard. That’s the only thing this person (Trump) understands.”
The duty on Canadian softwood is now 45 percent.
The tariffs not only affect softwood lumber, but upholstered furniture and Ford suggests it includes cabinets as well.
