Bill Salonen passes away at 90

A former mayor of the City of Dryden has passed away.

Bill Salonen was 90 years old.

He was born in Port Arthur in 1935.

He served on Dryden council for 14 years and was was mayor from 1992 until 1997,

He was also the first general manager of the Dryden Ice Dogs in 2001-2002.

Each year the teams in the Superior International Junior Hockey League battle for the Bill Salonen Cup, the championship trophy for the league.

In addition to being mayor, Salonen was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sport Hall of Fame in 2014.
